La Tahona: Ground floor | Upper floor | Patio, grden & verandas
About La Tahona
La Tahona is an old village house which has been restored. It is situated in one of the oldest districts, called “El Cabezuelo” and in one of the prettiest villages of the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park, namely the village of Zufre.
An old wood-burning oven was still conserved inside the house, which, along with other baker’s houses (its name, “La Tahona” means “flour-mill”), supplied the bread that was needed in the village. Unfortunately and, indeed, sadly for us, we could not keep this, due to its large size and state of dilapidation.
We have made an effort to carry out the restoration of the house with the utmost respect for the traditional architecture of the mountain village wherever possible. That said, the house contains all the equipment considered a normal part of our technological age.
Materials used in the house and an outline of its facilities.
The materials used in the wall covering, flooring, etc. of the house are top-quality and natural ones. They include wood, clay, ceramics… there is under-floor heating and a solar-powered water heater. We are especially proud of La Tahona’s clay floor, made specially for us by a local craftsman who boasts of having one of the oldest kilns in the area, one that harks back to Roman times. It was in that very oven that our own floor was fired.
Bath and Bedroom linen ( Towels, duvet covers, sheets) 100% cotton. Bed-covers in woven cotten. Winter and summer-weight duvets. Blankets. Tablecloths.
Electrical appliances in the kitchen: Fridge, Vitroceramic hob, Dishwasher, Washing-machine, Spin-drier, Electric oven. Barbecue and Arabic-design wood-burning oven in the patio. Fireplace in the lounge.
Architecture
The house two-storeyed, with a ground and first floor. The lower floor has a porched patio and garden, the whole way around it. The upper floor has a large terrace area from which the most spectacular views of the mountain range can be seen.
The split-level design of the house creates charming nooks and spaces
Disabled Access
This renovated old house is one whose architecture reflects the local rises and falls in the land it is built on and as such is, unfortunately, not easily accessible by wheelchair.
